This is one of the older soccer formations and certainly isn’t used today!

It was, however, used by Hungary in the 1950s and by the Brazilian world cup winners in 1958. As you can see from the picture it is a very attacking formation and this impression is deepened when you find out that the two full backs were also meant to drive on forward to give, in effect, a 2-4-4 formation.

This might have produced some very attacking play and lots of goals, but nowadays it is just too big a risk to be so uncovered at the back and you might end up conceeding more goals than you score if you’re not careful when playing this system!

Having said that…the saying goes that the best method of defence is attack!
