Although a fairly modern innovation, the 5-3-2 is somewhat less popular than the 4-4-2 so you may not see it quite as regularly.
In definition, there are five defenders, three midfielders and two strikers…as well as the goalkeeper of course!
This formation evidently strengthens the defence, but only at the expense of the midfield- the opposition team may therefore be allowed to dominate proceedings. In theory this is compensated for by the team switching to a 3-5-2 formation when attacking, so that the best of both worlds can ideally be achieved.
