Free Soccer Drills: Moves in Twos
Moves in twos is one of the free soccer drills which must only be used by players aged 10+. It’s basically a passing game, but you can develop lots of other skills as well.

Ok, so here’s how it’s done. Only use a certain amount of the pitch (e.g. a quarter)- the size of the grid you use depends on the number of players there are in the free soccer drills you are doing.
Get into pairs so that everyone has a player 1 and a player 2 (or a red and a blue player as shown in the diagram). Each pair has a ball and player 1 starts with this ball. Player 1 and player 2 should stand 5 metres apart. Player 1 passes to player 2 who turns with the ball and passes to a different player 1 from a different pair. The player 1 in his initial pair (his first partner) stays where he is and a different player 2 will pass him the ball. So all the player 2’s are receiving the ball, turning and passing whilst running around the grid. You can then switch it round so that player 1 gets a go at all the fun stuff!
You can progress with this excercise by doing as follows: Player 1 passes to player 2. Player 2 turns with the ball, runs with it, turns back and passes back to player 1. Player 1 stays where he is and player 2 goes to find a new partner (a different player 1 who has another ball). Again, the new player 1 passes to player 2, who does the same thing again. Then switch round player 1 and player 2 so that player 2 starts with the ball and player 1 does all the running this time!
The second progression for this one of the free soccer drills is for player 1 to pass to player 2. Player 2 turns with the ball and runs with it to find a new paertner (player 1) without a ball. Once player 2 has done all that, let player 1 have a go.
NB: You might need bibs or different colour tops to distinguish between player 1 and player 2!
There are loads of technical skills you can develop with this excercise: receiving, turning, passing and dribbling. The physical outcomes are running, balancing, turning, movement and kicking. Meanwhile it also helps with communication, focus and decision making.
So there you have it: moves in twos. How to do it. How to progess it. And how to know what you might’ve gained from it! Why not try some more of the free soccer drills.
