So here’s how it works. Split up into pairs with a ball between two (the size of area depends on the number of players and how old they are). Player 1 and player 2 (in the pair) stand opposite each other about 10 metres apart in most cases. Player 1 runs to player 2 with the ball and player 2 takes the ball off him. Player 2 runs with the ball to where player 2 had been standing (e.g. by a cone-which he runs around) and runs back to where player 1 is now standing. Player 1 takes the ball off player 2 and so on…

The way to develop this excercise further is as follows: player 1 passes to player 2, runs around player 2, player 2 passes in the path of player 1 who dribbles the ball back to where he had been standing. Player 1 passes to player 2. Player 2 now passes to player 1 and runs around him, then receives the return pass and runs back to his initial position. And so on…

The next way to progress is where player 1 dribbles the ball towards player 2 and at about half way he stops the ball by putting his foot on it. Player 2 is running towards the ball at the same time and takes it as soon as player 1 has stopped it. Then player 2 is the one to stop the ball.

Then, you can leave it open as to which one of these (take/overlap/foot on) and so players can do what they like. All in all, this excercise allows dribbling, creating space, passing and receiving. It also enables moving, running, kicking, decision making and communication. Why not look at another of the free soccer drills?
